      <image:title>Floating Light Sculptures</image:title>
<image:caption>I constructed and installed these seven ephemeral Floating Light Sculptures during a May 2013 residency at I-Park Foundation in rural Connecticut. The residency allowed me to develop an idea dating to 1994, and to bring it to fruition. The sculptures were octagons and circles, and they ranged in diameter from 9 inches to 5 ½ feet. They were best seen at night when their white glow was most intense. I was surprised that the forms maintained a quiet presence during the day. Equally unexpected was how the LED lights mimicked the moon’s glow and color. The floating sculptures appear in photographs as smaller, distant objects. Walking the trail around the pond led one quite close to where the light sculptures were installed, and the energy of the lights made size irrelevant. Surrounded by forest, the sculptures floated in the pond’s clear space, moving in concert with the wind. Nature subsumed these sculptures; once afloat, they belong more to the natural world than the man-made. Materials: wood, screws and grommets, Styrofoam, paint, museum putty, and submersible LED lights lit by 48-hour batteries. Many thanks to Lani Asuncion for the nighttime photos: #’s 6 – 10.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Earlier Installations - Body Drawings</image:title>
<image:caption>Any body of work is the culmination of various parts of life. When completed, they have their own life, apart from the stories that one might remember about their genesis. These Body Drawings came from conscious and subconscious places. They first appeared in my painting journals, although I had played with blurring writing out in a painted scroll work in 1993. They jumped out of the journals when I was the freelance visual arts critic for the Austin-American Statesman. The writing took more time than the studio, and these works were an assertion of the primacy of the visual in the studio and in my life. I wrote out stories on ond around the body, but blurred the words so they became visual images, a kind of energy. When my internist first took my medical history, he asked what I did. At that time, I worked for the Statesman and in my studio. I answered I was an artist and a writer. He said, “Oh, you use both sides of your brain.” This body of work gives that observation form, but skews the story through visual communication.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Inside Out is an exploration of the different speeds of ‘aging’ resulting from either indoor protection or exposure to outdoor elements. Using heavy watercolor paper, I placed a sheet inside in a sunny window, and one directly below it, out of doors. Natural processes and the elements – rain, cold, hail, dust and dirt, intense Texas heat – took their toll on the outdoor paper. For a year, I photographed the piece each day. The final photograph shows both pieces of paper: the worn outdoor paper is mounted on the pristine, white inside paper, with not even a mark from the shadow of the sun on it. This is a time-based piece is in two forms: photographs and video. (Video link under construction.) Paper Scale: 30 inches H X 22 inches W</image:caption>

      <image:title>Undersea - Untitled (Grotto)</image:title>
<image:caption>Sea salt crystals and inks on watercolor paper 22” H X 30” W 2013 The oceans, ancient and current, are the source of my current work. I am drawn to the seas for many reasons, including its beauty and power, the illusion of limitlessness, its age and history, teeming life and countless mysteries. I am interested in creating a sense of the ocean through direct experience, through memory, through experiments and through research. After reading “The Sea Around Us” by Rachel Carson – an incredibly visual writer -- I started working with the ocean as subject. I began drawing with a hyper-saturated sea salt solution and water-based paints. The resulting images are connected to my painting journals through the flow and feel of water. Salt and water are both key elements necessary for all life, and in these works they interact, creating the unexpected. I work intuitively and in partnership with natural elements. My process involves chance through the independent action of growing salt crystals. The salt works evoke a primal, non-verbal experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Giant Kelp Forest - Giant Kelp Forest 2016</image:title>
<image:caption>Sea salt crystals and inks on watercolor paper 94” H x 62” W (6 pieces – each 22” H x 30” W) 2016 Giant kelp can grow to 200 feet high, and have air pocket appendages, like gourds, that help support their vertical mass. They grow off the coast of California in a fertile forest environment. Their daily growth rate is quite remarkable: at times, reaching up to two feet a day. Scuba divers tell me that the waters where the forests grow is so cold that they can only swim there in July and August. (You can take mini submarine tours.) The giant kelp forests, mangrove forests and coral reefs are three buffer systems between the immense and powerful ocean and land. As light falls in the ocean, the colors we see change. The giant kelp forests seem to have a misty, magical color and light to them. This is part of what draws me to them. Traditionally, these ecosystems teem with ¼ of the marine life on the planet. The kelp forests and the coral reefs in particular are undergoing rapid losses with global warming. The ocean covers 70% of the planet, and has absorbed much of this warming -- this is why many notice little change on dry land. Yet undersea, many of these ecosystems are dying back with the 3-5 degree rise in ocean temperatures. Without this heat absorption by the ocean, temperatures on land would be over 120 degrees.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Mangrove Forests - Above and Below</image:title>
<image:caption>Sea salt crystals on archival paper 7’6” H x 18’ W 2018 These images may seem to have nothing to do with the ocean, yet mangrove roots live underwater for (usually) two tides a day. A primeval tree, mangroves are extremely adaptable. The soil they live in is low on oxygen, hence their tangled and prolific root structures not only serve as buttresses for the trees, but they breathe in oxygen for the trees when the tides are out. While the tides are in, and the roots are underwater, they provide a sheltered and bountiful ecosystem for marine life. Along with coral reefs and giant kelp forests, mangrove forests are one of three buffer zones for the ocean. In addition to serving as ecosystems for a diverse population of undersea life, buffer zones also temper the force of the ocean on shore lands. I was drawn to the mangrove forests strange aura: they are not ‘beautiful’ as humans seem to prize beauty. They are not welcoming to human beings: as home to tigers and a variety of snakes, they are dangerous places. Mangrove forests have been cut back to develop residences with ocean views. Yet other cultures use them to ward off erosion and damage from tsunamis, harvest honey, and fish. They absorb 10 times the carbon of terrestrial trees, and anecdotal evidence shows they may help balance ocean acidity in their range. In 2018, mangrove forests seem hopefully stable, while coral reefs and giant kelp forests are dying off or being hit hard with climate change. (Two years ago, the news was only about coral reefs. Now kelp forests are endangered.) I was unaware of what climate change really has in store for life on land, until the ocean started to open my eyes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Ocean Series- Undersea gallery - Untitled (Grotto)</image:title>

Visitors were invited to take their favorite collage from the piece, and I replenished the diamond every week throughout the exhibition. <image:title>Inside Out gallery slideshow</image:title>

      <image:title>Mangrove Forests Slideshow - Above and Below</image:title>
